How to Get Fit For FREE

How to Get Fit For FREE
Reading Time: 5 minutes

Fitness has become more and more accessible over the past few years. What was once restricted to the materially-rich and the time-rich is now available to those of us who have less cash to spend, and less time to spend it. We can’t all afford luxury gym memberships, state-of-the-art kit and the fanciest accessories to get, and keep, ourselves active, and thankfully we don’t have to.

Here are just some of the ways you can get fit and add a little more activity into your life… without having to spend a thing!

Go Outdoors

Head outdoors for a fun way to exercise for free

Whether you walk, jog, run or bear crawl is up to you, but if you want to add a little extra cardiovascular exercise into your life, outdoors is the place to do it. Let’s face it, stationary cardio is boring, and will just lead to half-arsed attempts to exercise or simply giving up – neither is truly beneficial to your health or self-esteem.

So why not get out there and explore your local areas, and beyond, for a fun way to blow off some steam? And for a bit of extra motivation? Arrange to walk or run with friends to give you a boost.

Try a HIIT workout at home - free exercise

Try a HIIT workout at home

HIIT, or high intensity interval training, is one of the biggest fitness movements to come out of the 21st century. Made up of intervals, it’s a great way to get fit in a hurry. And the best bit? You don’t need anything to be able to do it – you can do a simple, quick workout with nothing but the furniture in your house.

In fact, I even wrote a HIIT workout that you can follow to help add some strength training into your life with just a few simple moves. Give it a go!

Outdoor Gyms

Sometimes referred to as “trim trails”, outdoor gyms are popping up in parks across the country – my local town park has an outdoor gym consisting of monkey bars, parallel bars, a bench, chest press, shoulder press and pull-up station. They’re not always the best ergonomically (I’d actually much rather see a calisthenic-style workout park, but that’s just me) but they are great ways of getting people more active as you just can’t walk past without wanting to have a go!

Some local fitness companies even hold free classes utilising the equipment – great if you’re not sure how to use any of it.

Dance around your house for a free calorie burn!

Dance around your house for a free calorie burn!

I am the worst for dancing around in my kitchen while I’m cooking (my neighbours must think I’m crazy!) so if you want an energy boost and to get a bit of a sweat on then just throw some music on and have a dance off in the comfort of your own home!

I love to listen to all types of music, but something with a high tempo beat will be the best for getting you up and dancing!

Throwing some music on and dancing is just one way to get a free workout in - read this for more ideas... Click To Tweet

I was dancing to Aerosmith the other day and my 7-yr looked at me and said “THIS…. is getting way too weird for my taste.”

Hahaha! Love that – a girl after my own heart… there’s nothing like the classic rock bands!
